  • Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the use of the simulation concepts and methodology in decision support systems for the management of construction projects. The main thrust of the author's work is towards developing a microcomputer-based software support for managers seeking construction optimisation, production forecasting, training and communication. In these main areas, the tasks of the construction managers include making decisions related to preparation of cost and time estimates in the pre-construction period, resource allocations and organisation of work during construction and analysing and justifying each decision made. In order to fulfil these tasks effectively, the managers need supports in the form of specific information as well as a tool to help them to communicate with their operatives and directors. The usefulness of the simulation software comes in at all the stages of a project. It can be useful as a tool for the managers to carry out production forecasts for cost signficant activities prior to cost and time estimate of the whole project. It can also be a tool for the manager to plan, analyse and optimise the actual construction project. It is noted that, for the simulation approach to be fully exploited, the use of computer is inevitable. To fully reflect the stochastic nature of the variables encountered in the construction industry, a probabilistic approach has to be adopted. In this work, the powerful combination of the Monte Carlo technique and the computer is made to help managers in achieving more reliable decisions. After studying some of the useful concepts that can be applied in construction management decision support systems, the author has developed some computer program modules, namely simulation, help interface, database and visualisation. These efforts are aimed at illustrating the applications of the concepts and prove their practicality. One of the main concepts adopted in this work is the usefulness of the visual graphics in inculcating improved understanding of the simulation approach and in aiding the analysis, interpretation and communication functions in management.
